A quick continuation of the AMX NI-xx00 faults post.
So far the NX series controllers have been relatively robust.
I have had a couple of internal MicroSD cards fail after ~4 years (like the CF cards in the NI series). AMX reports that these are actually programmed per box, with the serial and MAC as part of the SD card contents. So far this hasn’t been an issue; in fact I was supplied generic images that have worked so far. You would think that they would have learned by now…
I have noticed one other issue that has popped up a couple of times though regarding the physical design inside; specifically where a couple of the circuit boards connect. Here is the inside a NX-3200 controller:
It mostly looks OK; the main boards are screwed down, and the connectors are pretty chunky. One thing stands out though:
The CPU card, next to the battery. It’s connected to the main board with a surface-mount board-to-board connector; something like a Molex SlimStack (I can’t remember exactly what).
The issue is that’s the only thing holding the board down. Combine that with the board hanging out in space, and it has a chance of popping out in shipping. It’s easy enough to fix (just re-seat the board), but definitely not ideal.
Just something to check if you get one that’s seemingly dead on arrival…
